chili peppers announce release of 18 unreleased tracks

in an interesting move, the red hot chili peppers announced today that they will be releasing 18 unheard songs over the next 6 months. the songs will be released in a series of nine double-sided singles in both digital and vinyl formats. on the surface it seems a bit strange that theyd opt to release 9 singles as opposed to a full lp, but in the digital music era most sales are in the form of $.99 singles on itunes, so its really just another way to market a full length album. adding another element to the unorthodox release is the cover art by folk/surf artist kelsey brooks. each vinyl cover will feature a different work of art, which can all be combined to create one large piece. me likey. kudos to the chilis for trying to keep it interesting while adapting to the ever-changing music industry vortex. the first single, 'strange man' on side a and 'long progression' on side b will hit stores august 14th.
